Gold Miner: Special Edition is a revised version of the original Gold Miner that includes new levels, improved graphics, and improved animation. The user controls a character in the center of the screen, similar to Gold Miner. He wields a claw that automatically travels from left to right and vice versa. When you click, the claw extends, grasping an item in the direction you choose. There are small and larger gold pieces, as well as other goods. It takes longer to bring in larger stuff. Picking up worthless stones is also an option, but it merely takes up time. You move to the next level when you earn a significant amount of money before the timer runs out. After each level, there are stores where you may buy useful goods and slot machines where you can bet. If the player accumulated coins in the previous levels, these show after every four levels. The only interaction is extending the claw at each level, which takes place on a single screen.
Other game modes include a no-limits option in which the player does not have to worry about money and can play for as long as he wishes. There is also an action option in which the slot machines do not appear and the player must catch the gold and other items by pulling the claw up with the left and right arrow keys.
